Wayside Cottage offers you character in its style and age with a degree of history and is about 270 years old. Apparently there is a piece of wood here dated 1745 from Ipswich boat builders, although I have never seen it, but the construction of the cottage is from around that period. It was first built, as two workmen's cottages on a large estate so, there are no positive records of the dwellings to go by.
All that I am saying here is drawn from the knowledge and memories of the people who lived here and in the village some 40 to 50 years ago, but most of the beams and walls (plaster) are original. Where some of the supporting beams were removed to make the sitting room more spacious some 25 to 30 years ago, new ones have been added to replace that much needed support.
In past years it has been said that a herbalist lived here serving medicines through a small window, which I believe is now my study, and going by the amount of whole and small broken bottles we have found whilst digging the garden, I can quite believe it!
How long ago this was I have no idea, but the study, which is an addition to the original structure is circa 100 to 150 years old, the same as the kitchen extension.
It was also used as tearooms in the days when cars were few and far between and also went a lot slower. With the bicycle one of the main modes of transport, folk had time to stop and needed to take much needed refreshment before continuing their journey.
In 2004 I decided to turn the cottage into a Bed and Breakfast. As there were no facilities up stairs and extension was necessary, it was started in mid November 2004 and finished towards the end of March 2005. I finally opened for my first guest on Saturday 30th April 2005..
